The Stadium began to be built in 329 BC. by the governor Lycurgus to host the Panathinaian games, the greatest celebration of the Athenians dedicated to the goddess Athena. In the middle of the 2nd AD. Herod the Attic covered the Stadium with marble while in 1894-96, the Stadium is re-marbled with the sponsorship of George Averoff and designs by Anastasios Metaxas. It was inaugurated in 1896 with the first modern Olympic Games.
